About Me
My name is Chetan Chiru
Boxing and wrestling have been a major part of my life. I’ve spent years training, competing, mentoring younger athletes, and learning what it takes to stay disciplined under pressure. I’ve competed in amateur boxing events, wrestled at the varsity level, mentored younger athletes, and taken on leadership roles that included managing team finances and helping organize fundraisers.
I’ve also experienced the other side of contact sports.
After taking a hard hit while sparring, I developed severe jaw pain and learned that my jaw had shifted out of alignment. I eventually needed surgery.
That experience changed how I looked at sports injuries.
My interest in athlete safety grew further through mentoring teenage boxers, teaching younger athletes, and shadowing dentists in an orthodontic setting, where I gained firsthand exposure to oral health and patient care.
I began asking one question:
How can we protect athletes before a hit becomes a lifelong dental problem?
That question became Guard Your Jaw.

Reseacrh
1 / Dental Injuries in Boxing
Researched on how boxing-related impact can affect the teeth, jaw, gums, and overall oral health. My work focuses on injuries such as cracked or knocked-out teeth, jaw trauma, and the long-term effects of repeated force. Studed common dental problems such as cavities, infections, plaque buildup, and gum health to better understand how athletes can protect their oral health before and after injury.
2 / Building a Sustainable Initiative
Researched how organizations and businesses grow from an idea into something sustainable. By studying how established companies started, developed their services, and reached their audiences, exploring how to build Guard Your Jaw into an initiative that can educate more athletes, coaches, and families.
3 / Everyday Dental Health
Researched common dental problems such as cavities, infections, plaque buildup, and gum health. Explored how proper dental care and prevention can help people maintain stronger teeth and healthier gums over time.
Leadership

Wrestling
Trained year-round while also mentoring younger wrestlers and helping them improve their skills, confidence, and discipline.

My Story
How It All Started?
One snowy Saturday in December, I was competing in my usual boxing tournament when an opponent landed a clean punch directly to my jaw.
I immediately knew something was wrong. At the hospital, X-rays confirmed that my jaw had been dislocated, and the doctor had to manually move it back into place.
That experience changed how I saw boxing injuries. What I had always treated as “part of the sport” suddenly felt much more serious.
It made me ask one question:
How can young athletes better prevent and respond to dental and jaw injuries?
That question became Guard Your Jaw.
Activities

Chess Club
Participated in Chess Club throughout high school, attending regular meetings and helping instructors prepare club activities. Chess strengthened my patience, strategic thinking, and ability to stay composed under pressure.

STEM Club
Through STEM Club, I worked with classmates on science-related activities and participated in an out-of-state research experience. The club helped me become more curious, collaborative, and comfortable exploring new ideas.

Golf
Involved in golf throughout high school, practicing consistently and contributing extra time to help maintain the course by collecting and cleaning up golf balls. The sport taught me patience, precision, and consistency.

HOSA
As a member of HOSA, I supported club activities and helped distribute information and materials to students. Being part of a healthcare-focused organization strengthened my interest in medicine and patient care.
